I painted this sketchbook drawing of Kem at Farmer’s Market with my Illustrative Storytelling class today. To see more of my class drawings, please go to my blog at: http://jeffreysmithillustrator.blogspot.com/
This is an in-class acrylic ink drawing for a story, Royal Jelly by Roald Dahl, that we explore as a class assignment. In this exercise, we use observational drawing(the art model,) inventive drawing (the bee,) and typography. This drawing was completed in 2 hours, and the thing that I try to get the students to see is three value design, and especially to be conscious of the white design as it is a way to create balance, move the eye through the composition, and connect the words to the figure. As for the drawing itself, I don’t use pencil lines. Instead, I try to visualize the composition in my mind’s eye, and then I begin to draw the image from the center of the page.
